Top 3 RC Rock Crawlers of 2021.
As 2021 kicks off, we want to dive in to the best of the RC Rock Crawler world. Although many are not new for 2021, their domination easily extends into the present and likely far into the future. lets jump in!
#1 Axial Capra 1.9
Have you ever drive a rock crawler and it feels like using cheat codes? Seriously, this is what it feels like to wheel the Axial Capra. Axial has struck the perfect balance of fun and capability. In many cases, capability can take away from the fun and challenging aspect. I can say that the fun is still there, yet it will be up to you to find more challenges for this guy. Perhaps the Axial Capra will push you more than you can push it.
Note that this is in kit form, so assembly is required, and really, this is the best part. You also need to provide your own radio system, misc. electronics, and tires, but if you can find this truck for under $350, scoop it up ASAP and get the other parts later. #2 Traxxas TRX-4
This fits perfectly between our #1 and #3 choice. Not quite the fully unlimited style as the Axial Capra, but still more offroad features than the Axial SCX 10, such as portal axles. The TRX-4 gets a 10 in the fun department, it is fun like no other crawler is. Portal axles, 2 speed gearbox, locking differentials, and cruise control make this extremely capable in even an armature’s hands. Additionally, a beefed-up undersize and respectable ground clearance make this crawler unstoppable.
In first gear, the TRX4 will crawl slow as a snail, and in second, it will get up and GO! You wouldn’t even know you are driving a crawler. Fighting the urge to send it General Lee style will definitely be a struggle. Even if the speed doesn’t suit you, you can always upgrade to a brushless motor in the future. Motor and servo changes are an easy upgrade.
There is both a Land Rover Defender and Pick-up truck version of this crawler. I’m partial to the scale looks of the Defender, but that model comes in at a slightly higher price. #3 Axial Racing SCX10 II Deadbolt
Taking a step back from unlimited class design, we come across the more scale oriented crawler, the SCX10 II deadbolt. This is more akin to the everyday offroader, and technologies and designs that are more familiar to the every-man, and personally, my favorite type of crawler. While not as capable as our #1 pick, this is fun just to cruise around in
Out of the box, the SCX10 is mostly assembled with all electronics pre-installed. Just add a battery. Note also that all electronics are waterproofed or water resistant, a definite must have if you plan to use this rig in the elements.
